GRANT MAKING POLICY

1. Objectives

Gates of Light, (the “Charity”) will support organisations or individuals which undertake activities which are charitable within the meaning of the laws of England and Wales and which fall within the Charity’s objects.

This may include support to Orphanages in Egypt in particular and the Middle East in general

The Charity’s main priorities are to help orphans aged between 2 and 16 years by providing support including financial grants.

2. What we fund

The Charity’s objects are TO RELIEVE THE NEEDS OF ORPHANS AGED BETWEEN 2 AND 16 YEARS IN THE MIDDLE EAST IN GENERAL AND EGYPT IN PARTICULAR THROUGH PROVIDING GRANTS AND SUPPORT TO ORGANISATIONS WHO ARE TAKING CARE OF THEM AND SUPPLYING THEM WITH ACCOMMODATION, CARE AND EDUCATION.

The Charity welcomes applications for funding directly from orphanages in the Territory (The Middle East and Egypt in particular)

3. Size of grants

The size of grants awarded is at the absolute discretion of the Trustees and will be notified to the recipient.

4. How to apply

Applications must be submitted in writing.  Applications must provide:

  • a covering letter, detailing the project to be supported;
  • a completed application form;
  • some evidence as to how the proposed project will fulfil its purpose;
  • confirmation that the organisation will provide the Charity with further information when requested, to allow it to monitor the impact of the grant; and
  • any other supporting material the applicant wishes to include (optional).

5. Exclusions

The Charity will not consider applications:

  • for any activities which are outside of the Charity objects;
  • for any activities which are not considered charitable in accordance with the laws of England and Wales;
  • for any political or commercial appeals; and
  • that will benefit the Trustees or anyone related to the Trustees.

6. Timelines

There are no deadlines for submission and applications will be considered as and when received.

A decision should be made within 3 months of receipt of an application, and all applications will be acknowledged on or before that date.

8. Unsuccessful applications

Due to the volume of applications the Charity expects to receive, the Charity is unable to support every application and, in order to minimise the cost to the Charity, it is not its policy to explain why any particular application has not been successful.

9. Monitoring

The Charity may, up to 12 months after the award of the grant, require the recipient to submit written reports detailing how the funds have been spent and how they have positively impacted the purpose for which they were given. By accepting the grant, the applicant agrees to comply with such requests.

10. Terms and Conditions

The grant may be used only for the purposes outlined in the application form. If the grant recipient does not use this grant for the specific purpose intended, they will be required to repay the grant in full, unless changes have been agreed in advance with the Charity.

The grant must be spent on the purpose for which it was awarded within the time limit specified unless an extension is agreed with the Charity. If timelines are delayed, the grant recipient must contact the Charity to request an extension.

The Charity will issue a letter of the grant which will set out in greater detail the terms and conditions attached to the grant.  The grant recipient will be required to sign the letter of the grant to acknowledge that it will adhere to its terms.
